A glimmer of hope for life

A small article in the Kansas City Star reports that the Kansas House of Representatives has passed a bill that places greater restrictions on late-term abortions. While it doesn't ban them, it severely restricts them and requires the abortionist to give concrete medical reasons why not having the abortion would cause "substantial and irreversible" harm to a "major bodily function" to the mother which is what the current Kansas statute requires for legally performing a late-term abortion. The bill now goes to the Senate.

The bill does not strictly mention Dr. Tiller in Wichita, but he is the primary focus of the need for the legislation. Interestingly, pro-abortion groups have not had much to say about the bill. Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, said the legislation would "do nothing to prevent unintended pregnancies or reduce the number of abortions in Kansas." The reason they are not loudly protesting is simple: the legislation seeks to enforce a law that the pro-abortion groups and specifically Dr. Tiller have been violating for years. The law already states that the abortionist must show "substantial and irreverible" harm to a "major bodily function" of the mother if the abortion is not performed. Up to now, the reasons given for performing the abortion have be extremely vague. Reasons such as "major risk to health" or "extreme complications to mother" have been common and give no explanation whatsoever to the "necessity" of performing the abortion.

This certainly is a step in the right direction. While we continue to work tirelessly for an end to abortion, severely restricting abortions is our secondary goal. We pray that this bill will pass the Senate as well and will help to prevent the destruction of new life in our state. Until next time...God bless.
